Description: Interestingly, organizations vary widely in their use of Preventive (PM) and Predictive Maintenance (PdM). When you look at one end of the spectrum, some organizations are still of the mindset that Preventive Maintenance is an overhaul of the equipment and these overhauls occur automatically on some time basis. This is like buying a set of tires for your automobile that has a 40,000 mile warranty and replacing them at 40,000 miles, regardless of wear. You don't see many people do that on their personal vehicles, preferring to measure wear and watch for wear strip appearance before replacing the tires. Yet, some of those same individuals are quick to defend overhauling equipment on an annual basis. Condition-monitoring approaches (PdM) have proven to be more cost effective and introduce less opportunity for infant mortality than overhaul methods. Organizations on this end of the PM spectrum often have not documented the basis for PM activities and have not engaged in PM Optimization processes.
Organizations on the opposite end of the spectrum rely heavily on Predictive Maintenance (PdM) to lower costs and increase overall reliability. Some of these organizations derive as much as 70% of their corrective actions from PdM monitoring and trending.
Regardless of where your organization is on the spectrum, People and Processes can assist you in developing the right maintenance strategies for your equipment using Reliability-Centered Maintenance methodologies. For organizations that lack sufficient resourcing, we are frequently asked to develop their entire PM/PdM programs. How can we help you succeed?
